DESCRIPTION:Families with children going into Kindergarten and younger are invited to enjoy nature through Picnics in the Park! Picnickers are asked to bring a picnic lunch\, blanket or tablecloth\, and have an adult present throughout the program. Please meet us at the specified park where we will eat lunch first\, then have a short program and activities based on a nature-themed book.  Older children are welcome to attend\, but the content and activities is geared for younger learners.\n \nJune 5th – “Lovely Ladybugs” @ Pioneer Park – 3987 Shadow Ave.\, Osage\nJune 12th – “Sunflowers” @ Interstate Park – Mitchell\nJune 19th – “Sweet Summer Berries” @ Milton R. DESCRIPTION:Join Naturalist Chelsea Ewen Rowcliffe to discover the flavors of the forest! There is an entire grocery store of delicious\, local\, wild foods just waiting outside your backdoor! This HANDS ON class focuses on how to identify key features of seasonal wild edible plants\, knowing when and what to ethically and sustainably harvest\, and how to prepare wild foods. Flowers\, greens\, roots\, and shoots are just a few of the things that will be on the menu! Come ready to help dig\, cut\, cook\, and most importantly EAT! The class will begin with a lesson identification\, rules\, and tools\, and then transition to a leisurely collection hike. In the field\, we will identify local edible plants\, collect appropriate parts\, and return to the nature center. Then it’s time to prepare\, cook and sample the flavors of spring! DESCRIPTION:Full Moon & Wildflower Walk \nApril 22nd \n7:30 PM \nHamlin Garland Wildlife Area – St. Ansgar \n\nLet’s celebrate EARTH DAY with a leisurely walk through the woods to admire spring wildflowers! Our walk will begin at 7:30 at the Hamlin Garland Wildlife Area\, just north of St. Ansgar on Hwy 218. MCCB Naturalist Chelsea Ewen Rowcliffe will guide you through the evening woods\, looking for ephemeral wildflowers\, waking spring trees\, and returning migrating wildlife. We’ll welcome the Full Pink Moon as we finish our walk. Chelsea will provide ID guides and full moon activities. Please wear weather appropriate clothing and shoes/boots. A water bottle is also recommended. This class is program is free and appropriate for all ages. This program will be cancelled if there is rain or storms. SUMMARY:Frog and Toad Call Survey Training
DESCRIPTION:Calling all wildlife watchers! The Mitchell County Conservation is partnering with the Iowa DNR Wildlife Diversity program to host a Frog and Toad Call Survey Training workshop at the Milton R. Owen Nature Center. These workshops are for anybody interested in getting involved in Iowa’s Frog and Toad Call Survey\, which has been collecting data on our state’s amphibians for over 30 years!\nNaturalist Chelsea Ewen Rowcliffe has been involved with collecting data for the Frog & Toad Call Survey for over 12 years!\nTo get involved with the frog and toad call survey you will need an adventurous spirit and the interest to learn up to 16 frog and toad breeding calls. You can check out a few of those calls in the Iowa DNR wildlife sound library!\nInterested volunteers should first visit https://www.iowadnr.gov/vwmp and read through the survey requirements to see if it is something you’d have the time for and an interest in. You can then see whether there are any survey routes nearby that need a monitor by browsing the maps of available routes. If you don’t see an available route near you\, creating your own survey route is also an option!\nThe time commitment for conducting the survey and submitting data is roughly 10 hours total between April and July each year and will require being out after dark for roughly 2 hours during each survey period. Workshops are most appropriate for adults or older children (12+).\nEach workshop has limited seats available and a $10.00 fee is required. Registration will close a week prior to the workshop or whenever the workshops have been filled. DESCRIPTION:With the county seat of Osage being the “City of Maples”\, what better way to break the winter blues than learning about the liquid gold that flows for free each spring-MAPLE SYRUP! Join Naturalist Chelsea Ewen Rowcliffe on Wednesday\, March 13th at 5:30 PM at the Milton R. Owen Nature Center for a demonstration of how to harvest this sweet treat.  \nWe’ll cover how to identify maple trees\, the equipment needed\, “tapping” the trees\, and turning sap in to syrup!\nThis program is free and open to the public\, but please call our office  at (641) 732-5204 to sign up. We will be going on a leisurely walk around the Nature Center\, so please wear outdoor shoes and weather appropriate clothing.
