DESCRIPTION:Hunter Education Class\nApril 4th – 5-8 PM\nApril 5th – 9-4\nPre registration is required\nFREE\n\nHunter education is a mandatory program that is designed to introduce students to several lifelong skills that are important to many different types of outdoor recreational opportunities. The course teaches students basic survival and first aid skills\, outdoor safety\, wildlife identification\, the basics of wildlife management\, hunting laws\, and firearm/archery safety. Hunter education also stresses the importance of individual responsibility and outdoor ethics. The safety\, recruitment\, and retention of hunters are important in continuing the tradition of hunting in Iowa’s GREAT Outdoors!\nThis class is prioritized for students 12 years old and older. Adults are welcome to stay with their youth student through the class\, but it is not required.\nStudents are asked to bring a sack lunch and something to drink on Friday and Saturday\, as the course will continue through meal hours.\nPLEASE WEAR/BRING OUTDOOR GEAR as we will go outside during different portions of instruction. All other teaching materials\, firearms\, & safety equipment will be provided.\nThis is a CLASSROOM COURSE and does not count as a field day. Students must successfully complete BOTH days to earn their certificate.\nFriday\, April 4th\, 5-8PM\nSaturday\, April 5th\, 9AM-4PM\nThis class is FREE\, but is limited to 20. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Deer and Turkey Outdoor Show at the Milton R. Owen Nature Center in Osage\, Iowa\, on March 15th\, 2024\, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm! Get ready for a day filled with exciting activities and valuable information about the great outdoors. \nYouth Shed Hunt: Let your little ones participate in a fun shed hunting activity and learn about the tracks and signs left behind by deer. Find deer antler sheds and receive a prize at one of two sessions taking place at 10 am and 1pm. \nArchery Competition (Bows provided): Bows will be provided\, so bring your enthusiasm and compete with fellow archers. Prizes awarded in 3 different age classes: 18 and up\, 13-17\, and 12 and under. This competition runs from 9-3pm. $5 for 3 arrows – shoot as many times as you would like. \n3D Archery shoot (must bring your own bow): Have some fun while donating to a good cause at our 3D Archery shoot! Various 3D targets\, some familiar\, some silly\, will be located behind nature center. Score cards will be issued upon registration. Prize awarded to top archer. \nWild Game Displays: Share your animal mounts and let others admire the diversity of our local wildlife. Trophy or terrible – it’s all in good fun and we want to see! All wildlife taxidermy mounts welcome for display. White-tailed deer mounts and sheds can be registered for official scoring\, and anyone who brings a mount or display gets 1 free raffle ticket. Limit 2 scorable units per person. (For example\, one European mount and a matched shed would be ok\, a full mount and two unmatched single sheds would be over the limit) Full head/skull mounts will be scored first. \nFalconry Demonstrations: Witness the breathtaking agility and hunting precision of falcons and learn how they can become a hunting companion by attending demonstrations presented by expert falconers. Demonstrations at 11am and 2pm. The falcon and caretakers will also be on display and available for questions during rest of show. \nDeer Recovery Blood Trailing Dog Demonstrations: These dogs have been recognized by the Iowa DNR for their high recovery rates assisting hunters locate their deer. Learn how local dog handler Chris Johnson trains and utilizes blood trailing dogs during various hunting seasons and watch them in action! \nFood Truck: Who doesn’t love a good food truck? Take a break and recharge with delicious selections from a food truck\, serving up mouthwatering treats all day. \nWildlife Biologists: Engage with wildlife biologists and gain insights into wildlife behavior\, conservation efforts\, and tips for a successful hunting season. 9-4pm \nOutdoor Retailers Vendors: Browse through a variety of vendors offering outdoor gear\, equipment\, and accessories. Discover the latest products from trusted brands in the industry. Time 9-4pm \nTrail Camera Photo Gallery: Captured a cool shot from your trail camera? DESCRIPTION:FIRST DAY HIKE\n\nWant to add more outdoor time to your New Year’s resolutions? Join us for a beautiful afternoon First Day Hike! First Day Hikes are part of a nationwide initiative led by the American Hiking Society and America’s State Parks. Learn more about this tradition at https://americanhiking.org/first-day-hikes. This hike will meet at Robin’s Nest Wildlife Area\, just south of Highway 9 on Indigo Avenue. We will take a leisurely hike through the property while Naturalist Chelsea points out winter wildlife wonders along the way. We hope you join us to savor the beauty of Mitchell County’s natural resources and be inspired to take advantage of these local treasures all throughout the year.\n\nHiking during the winter can be fun as long as you prepare with these tips:\n\n\nDress in layers you can peel off or put on when you stop and go on the trail. Your base layer should be a wicking fabric that will pull sweat away from the skin. Don’t forget your gloves!\n\n\nWear a hat! During the colder months it is important to keep your head covered to maintain function and not lose precious body heat.\n\n\nStay Hydrated! Keep your water bottle warm – carry it in your coat\, or use an insulating sleeve like a koozie to help prevent water from freezing.\n\n\nDon’t toss the sunscreen! Winter hikers often forget about the sun’s glare reflecting off of white snow.\n\n\nBe prepared for shorter days. Have a good idea of usable daylight hours and always carry a headlamp or flashlight with extra batteries.\n\n\nWear bright clothing. It will help you stand out against the leaves and snow\, especially during hunting seasons.\n\n\nAlways tell someone where you are going and when you plan to be back.

Touring the lights is free\, but any donations are always appreciated. All funds raised will support outdoor recreation in Mitchell County\, helping keep our community vibrant and active! After pairing up\, hunters & mentor crews travel out to MCCB wildlife areas for the hunt! \n\nThis event is offered for FREE through the Mitchell County Pioneer Chapter of Pheasants Forever\, however we do ask that interested participants call ahead to register. This ensures we have enough mentors for interested youth. The course teaches students basic survival and first aid skills\, outdoor safety\, wildlife identification\, the basics of wildlife management\, hunting laws\, and firearm/archery safety. Hunter education also stresses the importance of individual responsibility and outdoor ethics. The safety\, recruitment\, and retention of hunters are important in continuing the tradition of hunting in Iowa’s GREAT Outdoors! Iowa Law requires that anyone born after January 1\, 1972\, must be certified in Hunter Education before they are eligible to purchase an Iowa hunting license. \nThis class is prioritized for students 12 years old and older. Adults are welcome to stay with their youth student through the class\, but it is not required. \nStudents are asked to bring a sack lunch and something to drink on Friday and Saturday\, as the course will continue through meal hours. Monarch Butterflies have an incredible story to tell—from their life cycle of caterpillar into butterfly\, to their arduous migration to Mexico– these little beauties are a wonder to both the young and young at heart. At this program\, we will discuss the life cycle\, the complicated migration\, importance of native wildflowers\, how to raise Monarchs\, and the current population and conservation status of the Monarch Butterfly. Nets will be available to try and catch any wild-flying Monarchs\, and participants will learn how to tag Monarchs and release them on their journey south. Please bring any butterflies YOU have raised or captured to be tagged\, too! This program is Free and does not require registration. This fun bike ride offers multiple bike routes with a choice of: \n\n\nFamily Route – WGWL Northern Branch Option – Out-and-Back that starts at WGWL Trailhead to Bailey Station or IA/MN state line and returns (22 miles round trip to Bailey Station or 26 miles round trip to the IA/MN Border)\n\n\n\nSkilled Route – An Iowa/Minnesota connected route that starts and ends at WGWL Trailhead\, goes to Minnesota on the Shooting Star Trail then returns – a 56 mile combination of WGWL Trail and Shooting Star Trail. Optional free shuttle along 4 miles of gravel\, or you may bike it if you wish!\n\n\n$12 to ride/pre-register \n\n$15  same-day registration \n\nEvent shirts available for $20 to pre-registered riders prior to September 6th. No guaranteed availability to same day registrants for $25. \n\nThis is a self-supported event in regards to hydration. There is a shuttle between the two trails from 10:30 A.M. – 1:30 P.M. Stand-alone toilets are located along the route at city parks and points-of-interest along the WGWL Trail\, and a SAG Wagon will be available on-call. When you register on-line or at the Trailhead\, you will receive a wristband that can be punched at various designated stops in Riceville\, McIntire\, Bailey’s Station\, Adams\, and LeRoy. Refreshments specials will be available at restaurants located along the routes\, and Free “Heavenly Apples” to registered bikers at Bailey snack station from 12-3PM. “Heavenly Apples” are fresh cut apples drizzled with caramel and peanuts – just show them your wristband! If you are not a registered biker\, but would still like this sweet treat\, “Heavenly Apples” will be available at Baileys Station for non-riders to purchase for $4.  Listing of refreshment establishments and a map will be provided to pre-registered riders prior to the event and to same-day Border Bike registrants. Proceeds support the Wapsi-Great Western Line Trail – a linear park preserving the past for the future\, giving active people a safe place to run\, hike\, and bike. \n\n*The WGWL Trail reserves the right to cancel the event due to situational status of the illness or other unforeseeable events. SUMMARY:Star Gazing!
DESCRIPTION:One of the BEST stargazing spots in Mitchell County is at the shelter along our Cedar River Greenbelt Trail. After a short (less than 10 min/.4mi) candle-lit walk down the trail\, a large grassy area welcomes stargazers for an amazing view of the night sky during the height of the Perseid Meteor Shower. This meteor shower peaks annually around August 12th\, with a large portion of the meteors\, also called “shooting stars”\, seeming to originate in the Northeast sky near the constellation “Perseus”.\nRound up your friends and family\, grab something comfortable to sit on (a blanket or camp chair works great)\, a water bottle\, some snacks\, bug spray\, and a headlamp or flashlight – then just sit back and enjoy the celestial show! Comfortable walking shoes and a sweatshirt or light jacket are also recommended (depending on the weather).\nWhile we wait for dark\, stargazers will enjoy a casual program on night sky viewing\, stars\, and constellations. Binoculars\, star charts\, and constellation guides will be provided for use. Supplies to build your own micro-meteor collector\, and other fun star activities will also be available. \nThis program will be cancelled if there is cloud cover or storms predicted for the area. DESCRIPTION:Join Mitchell County Conservation staff Andy Taets and Chelsea Rowcliffe to explore nature this summer! During these camp days\, we will be adventuring through many different outdoor skills. You can join us for all six camps\, or just     sign up for your favorites.\n\n\nJune 25th & 26th – “Where the WILDflowers Grow”\, 9-2\, Pitzen Cabin\, Riverside Park\, Stacyville\nJuly 5th – Geocaching the Greenbelt – 9-11:30AM\nJuly 12th – Fat Tire Bike Ride – 12:30-4PM\nJuly 16th – Kayaking the Cedar – 9AM-3PM\nJuly 19th – Shooting Sports – 9-11:30AM\nJuly 26th – Survive the Wild! – 9AM-1PM\n\n\n\nCamps will meet in a different Mitchell County Conservation location for each date. SUMMARY:Free Kayak and Paddle board guided floats
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a relaxing evening exploring Mitchell County’s beautiful waters with our guided paddles! This is a FREE program led by MCCB Natural Resource & Outdoor Recreation Specialist\, Andy Taets. Be sure to check out the special “Full Moon Float” on June 21st!  \n\n\nJune 12th\nJune 21st – Full Moon Float!\nJuly 11th\nJuly 18th\nAugust 7th\nAugust 15th\n\n  \nThese floats are open to all ages\, but children must have the ability to control their own boat or plan to paddle with an adult. All equipment and basic paddling instructions are provided and all floats will take place in Mitchell County. If you have your own equipment and would like to join the float\, please contact Andy with your information to be added to the attendee list. Floats will typically take place around 6:00 in the evening\, and once you have signed up\, you will be contacted with the specific meeting time & location.
