SUMMARY:Mosquito Buck Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Mosquito Bucket Workshop\nJune 28th\n1-3 PM\nPre-Registration Required\n$10 for MC Outdoors Members/$15 for non-members\nMilton R. Owen Nature Center\n \nLet’s kick off the summer season with a project to help you\, and our environment stay healthy\, happy\, and itch-free! We’re partnering with local business\, Sumitomo Biorational Company (formerly Valent BioSciences) to promote safe & effective mosquito control for your backyards\, outdoor spaces\, and campsites!\n\nHow it works: at this workshop\, we’ll provide all the supplies needed to create a “Mosquito Bucket”. The bucket draws in mosquitoes already nearby (not from far away)\, then stops the next generation before it hatches. It works because of Bti\, a natural bacterium that targets mosquito larvae but doesn’t harm biodiversity like bees\, birds\, or butterflies. Sumitomo Biorational Company makes Bti products right here in Mitchell County! This mosquito bucket is a safer alternative to fogging or harmful sprays for us\, our pets\, and wildlife. Learn more about this project by visiting https://homegrownnationalpark.org/mosquito-bucket-challenge\n\nWith your registration\, you’ll be provided a bucket\, the Bti from Sumitomo Biorational\, and accessories to create your Mosquito Bucket. We’ll also have supplies to decorate and customize your bucket\, as well as information to put your bucket to work reducing mosquitos all season long.\n\nPlease CALL TO REGISTER! (641) 330-0765 or (641) 732-5204

SUMMARY:Star Gazing
DESCRIPTION:Star Gazing\nAugust 12\, 2026\n8:30 PM\nFREE\nLund’s Access/Cedar River Greenbelt Trail Gazebo\n3700 Hickory Avenue\, Osage\n\nOne of the BEST stargazing spots in Mitchell County is at the shelter along our Cedar River Greenbelt Trail. After a short (less than 10 min/.4mi) candle-lit walk down the trail\, a large grassy area welcomes stargazers for an amazing view of the night sky during the height of the Perseid Meteor Shower. This meteor shower peaks annually around August 12th\, with a large portion of the meteors\, also called “shooting stars”\, seeming to originate in the Northeast sky near the constellation “Perseus”.\nRound up your friends and family\, grab something comfortable to sit on (a blanket or camp chair works great)\, a water bottle\, some snacks\, bug spray\, and a head lamp or flashlight – then just sit back and enjoy the celestial show! Comfortable walking shoes\nand a sweatshirt or light jacket are also recommended\n(depending on the weather).\n\nWhile we wait for dark\, stargazers will enjoy a casual program on night sky viewing\, stars\, and constellations. Binoculars\, star charts\, and constellation guides will be provided for use. Supplies to build your own micro-meteor collector\, and other fun star activities will also be available.\n\nThis program will be cancelled if there is cloud cover or storms predicted for the area. Please check our Facebook page\, or contact Chelsea at (641) 330-0765 for questions\, directions\, or weather concerns.\nThis program is free and open to the public.
